Dental Surgery
- Surgical procedures involving the oral cavity and jaws are included in this category.
- Impacted tooth extractions, cyst and tumor surgeries, implant placement, and other minor/maxillofacial operations fall under this field.
- Procedures are performed under local anesthesia and are generally painless.
- Mild swelling, pain, or tenderness may occur afterward; these are temporary.
- Following prescribed medications and aftercare instructions accelerates healing.
Reminder: Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular checkups after surgical procedures is crucial for recovery.
20-Year (Wisdom) Tooth Extraction
One of the most common procedures in oral surgery is the removal of
impacted wisdom teeth. These third molars usually erupt
between the ages of 17 and 25. Because of insufficient space in the dental
arch, they may remain partially or completely impacted.
When Extraction May Not Be Necessary
Wisdom teeth may be left in place under regular monitoring if:
- They erupt in the correct position
- They contact properly with the opposing tooth
- They do not cause crowding or gum problems
When Extraction is Necessary
- If they remain impacted
- If they erupt in the wrong direction
- If they cause pain, infection, or decay
- If they put pressure on adjacent teeth
Other Surgical Procedures in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
- Cyst and Tumor Surgery: Removal of cystic formations or benign tumors in the oral cavity and jaw.
- Implant Surgery: Placement of dental implants into the jawbone to replace missing teeth.
- Frenectomy and Vestibuloplasty: Release of tight frenulum or muscle attachments of the lip, cheek, or tongue.
- Orthognathic Surgery (Le Fort, etc.): Jawbone surgery with orthodontics to correct skeletal discrepancies.
- TMJ Surgery: Direct interventions on the temporomandibular joint for severe pathology.
Impacted Canine Teeth
After wisdom teeth, the most commonly impacted teeth are canines (especially in the palate).
- In some cases, impacted canines are extracted surgically.
- In others, they are surgically exposed and guided into the arch with orthodontic treatment and brackets.
